Nutrition of Fur Animals

چکیده

THE ONLY FUR ANIMALS that are now being raised commercially to any great extent are silver foxes and minks. Martens and fishers also have commercial possibilities if satisfactory reproduction can be obtained in captivity. Attempts have been made at one time or -another, largely through the efforts of propagandists, to ''ranch-raise'' skunks, badgers, raccoons, beavers, and muskrats for their fur, but the undertakings were not profitable because the cost of feeding and other costs of production exceeded the market quotations on similar wild-caught skins. A striking mutation may develop in some of these species, however, which will produce an animal with new^ characteristics that will make production in captivity remunerative. Natural selection in the wild, where matings are promiscuous, fosters the survival of those animals best fitted to live under rigorous conditions. The survival of fur animals in captivity, where matings can be controlled, is dependent upon their ability^ to produce beautiful pelts economically under more or less pampered conditions, rather than upon adaptation to rigorous competitive living. The profitable t^^pe is the docile, tractable, easily kept animal that responds to care without putting on excess fat and becoming sluggish and nonproductive. Economy of handling in captivity does not permit the retention of animals that require considerable exercise to be prolific. Elimination of the undesirable types is taking place on the more progressive ranches, though most emphasis in selection has thus far been placed on color and density of fur, prolificacy, and other factors that have a greater immediate bearing on commercial value.

Observations on the Factor Curative of Nutritional Achromotrichia

In rats kept on a basal diet deficient in vitamin B and supplemented with vitamin B1, riboflavin, and vitamin Be cutaneous lesions may appear which, in several instances, may become severe and even genera1ized.l In the same group of rats fur alterations also can be observed in the form of depigmentation (“graying”) in piebald or black animals and of “rusting” in albino animals. These fur change...

Altered 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine thyroxine ratio in experimentally induced kwashiorkor and obesity in rats.

The plasma triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) ratios have been evaluated in kwashiorkor and diet-induced obese weaned rats. The concentrations of T3 and T4 were determined in plasma by radio-immunoassay. A significant decrease in T3 level in the order kwashiorkor < obese < control was observed. However T4 concentration was more elevated (P < 0.01) in the obese than the normal controls, wh...

Aflatoxin levels in laboratory animal diet components.

According to BUNTENKOETTER (1971) about 60 true mycotoxins have been identified. Of these, aflatoxins B, M, and G, are the most toxic. Aflatoxin B, is 100-1,000 times more toxic than butter yellow and benzpyrene (GEDEK, 1973). This highlights its significance both for applied animal nutrition and for animal experiments. Studies on the susceptibility of various laboratory animals to Aflatoxin B,...

Diseases of Fur Animals

THE BUSINESS of raising animals for their fur has passed rapidly ¿hrough progressive stages to a degree of efiSciency comparable with that of other branches of animal husbandry. With this development has come fairly eflScient control of the diseases of these animals. Since silver foxes and minks are the species most frequently propagated on fur farms, research on the diseases of these animals h...
